The Heart Work of Industrial Development |
|
| |
It took a lot of hard work over many years to secure the steady flow of high-value investments Singapore now enjoys.

But for the bright and capable young EDB officers who set out to convince foreign investors to put their money in Singapore, it was also "heart work" - they were driven by their belief in Singapore's future, and they carried out their duties with passion and vigour.
This was why the book that recorded how the EDB steered Singapore's industrial development from 1961 and into the 21st century was called Heart Work.

Launched on the board's 41st anniversary on 1 August, 2002, the 354-page book tells of the struggles that were faced and overcome, the strategies that were adopted to secure a steady inflow of high-value investments into Singapore, and what was done to ensure that companies had what they needed for success.
In his foreword, Senior Minister Lee Kuan Yew, said: "EDB officers had imbibed the values and attitudes of their leaders in Singapore - a willingness to learn from others, and a readiness to accept assistance from any quarter.
"Singaporeans put their faith in our young officers, who had integrity, intellect, energy, drive and application. They helped shape our policies to bring in the investments."
The lead author of Heart Work was Chan Chin Bock, currently Chairman of EDB's Consulting Group. Twenty eight others, from the public and private sectors, also contributed to the book.
Mr Chan was an EDB officer, and was chairman from 1972 to 1975 and subsequently its Senior Advisor for five years.
On the germination of the book, Mr Chan said, "This book project began several years ago as an idea from EDB's Human Resources team to capture the experiences of the past as learning lessons for the future.
"They suggested that I pen down anecdotes and stories from my years in EDB that would serve to inspire and guide the younger generation of EDB officers. These stories would also serve as invaluable background material to reflect the EDB core values and attitudes - important factors of the Board's success which the HR group would like to build on."
