Overview A number of international organizations have chosen to set up in Singapore. The following are examples of some of these organizations:
Business Software Alliance A non-profit trade association that actively promotes the growth of the software industry, Business Software Alliance works with governments worldwide to put in place policies that provide adequate and effective copyrights, which meet international standards. Part of their efforts also includes the development of education campaigns in collaboration with local industry associations to increase public awareness about software copyright and software asset management. Recognizing the strong potential for growth of the software industry in Asia, BSA chose to establish its Asia-Pacific regional headquarters in Singapore.
International Air Transport Association (IATA) The International Air Transport Association (IATA) leads, represents and serves the international air transport industry. Its 265-member airlines account for 94% of scheduled international air traffic. IATA first began operations in Singapore in 1969 and it now has about 60 employees in its regional office here. Its office here oversees and coordinates IATA’s activities in the Asia Pacific, including representing the interests of IATA member airlines, liaising with airport authorities, providing training etc.
International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) The International Baccalaureate Organisation (IBO) was established with the goal to educate young people worldwide on understanding intercultural issues. To meet the increasing demand for such quality international education in the region, IBO has set up its Asia-Pacific regional office in Singapore to provide teacher training, assist schools in the implementation of International Baccalaureate Programmes as well as to work with governments and international organizations in the region to develop quality programmes for international education and rigorous assessment.
Tax Free World Association (TFWA) Tax Free World Association (TFWA), the world’s largest Duty Free and Travel Retail association with more than 360 premium brand members, chose to base its Asian office in Singapore to further develop its regional activities and Asian brands. The Association will work with industry players and national aviation bodies to develop the travel retail and duty free industry in the region. As a major organizer of many large luxury brand exhibitions and conferences around the world, TFWA’s activities allow top executives from across the duty free and travel retail industry to discover new products, network with industry players and gather exclusive information about this competitive market.
Temasek Foundation The Temasek foundation is a non-profit philanthropic organization established by Temasek Holdings to contribute to communities in Asia, including Singapore. With a modest staff, the foundation works with like-minded partners from various sectors to bring about improvements in the lives of people and support the development of the region’s human capital. The board of the foundation comprises distinguished leaders in the business and the community sectors from Singapore and other Asian countries.
World Vision International World Vision International is a Christian relief, development and advocacy organisation dedicated to working with children, families and their communities worldwide to reach their full potential by tackling the causes of poverty and injustice. World Vision set up its Asia-Pacific headquarters in Singapore to house several critical regional functions including the centre for its Asia Tsunami Response Team (ATRT).
Partnerships with International Organisations In addition, Singapore, through the Singapore Cooperation Programme, has established many joint training programmes with various organizations, under an arrangement known as the Third Country Training Programme (TCTP). Harnessing the joint expertise of Singapore and the partner organizations, these training programmes are part of Singapore’s larger capacity-building initiative for other countries. The following are a selection of our training partners.
Asian Development Bank (ADB) Singapore and the Asian Development Bank have been conducting joint training courses since 1991 for developing countries under the Singapore-ADB Technical cooperation Programme.
Commonwealth of Learning (COL) The Commonwealth of Learning (COL) conducts training for Chief Executive Officers of training institutes from Commonwealth African countries.
Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Singapore and the Economic and Social Comission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) are jointly conducting training programmes with a focus on tourism, trade promotion, port management, project planning and other fields mutually agreed upon for countries in the Asia-Pacific region.
Hanns Siedel Foundation The Hanns Siedel Foundation conducts human resource development for government officials.
International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) The ICAO is working with Singapore to promote the safety and development of civil aviation through human resource development. More than 220 fellowships have been awarded to 65 ICAO contracting states to attend specialized training programmes at the Singapore Aviation Academy.
International Maritime Organisation (IMO) The IMO provides technical assistance to member countries on matters relating to maritime safety and prevention and control of marine pollution. International Monetary Fund (IMF) Singapore and the IMF established the IMF-Singapore Regional Training Institute in 1997, providing training for government officials from the Asia-Pacific region in areas of macroeconomic and financial management, as well as legal and statistical subjects.
United Nations Children’s Fund The Singapore-UNICEF Third Country Training Programme has provided joint courses on Early Childhood Education to participants from 19 countries.
United Nations Development Programme Since 1992, over 1200 government officials from 86 countries, including those from the Carribbean and Sub-Saharan Africa, have participated in the Singapore-UNDP programmes, in areas such as civil aviation management and environmental health.
World Bank Singapore and the World Bank have agreed to pool resources and share expertise with developing countries in areas such as environmental management, finance and banking, urban development, information technology, hospital reform and education.
World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) WIPO recently renewed its partnership with Singapore to expand collaborative activities, including conducting joint training courses for developing countries to enhance their capacity to implement and develop international Intellectual Property standards.
World Health Organisation (WHO) WHO will be focusing on the management of National Blood Programmes in its collaboration with Singapore. To date, they have trained a total of 70 health officials from other countries.
World Trade Organisation (WTO) WTO is providing joint-trade related courses with Singapore and from 2007, Singapore will host WTO’s Regional Trade Policy Training Course till 2010. |
