Opening of Toray Water R&D Centre

Minister Mr aYaccob Ibrahim, Guest of Honour at the Toray Singapore Water Research Centre official opening
The Toray Singapore Water Research Center (TSWRC) was established in September 2009 at the Nanyang Environment & Water Research Institute (NEWRI) with the aim of conducting research and development of water treatment technology based on Toray’s water treatment membranes.
At the TSWRC, Toray will further enhance the ongoing joint research with PUB and plans to start a pilot test for recycling wastewater combining membrane bioreactors and RO membrane. Toray also plans to utilize NTU’s internship program to enhance its collaboration with the university. By 2015, Toray will employ about 30 research staff and develop TSWRC into the core water treatment research and development base after the research centers in Japan and China.

Launch of Singapore-Peking-Oxford Research Enterprise

LAUNCH OF SPORE: Representatives of partnering organisations present at the event include (From left) Professor Alistair Borthwick, Deputy head of Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford, NUS Deputy President (Research and Technology) Prof Bar
The Singapore, Peking and Oxford Research Enterprise (SPORE) for Water Eco-Efficiency is a S$63 million initiative jointly funded by the Environmental and Water Industry Development Council (EWI), NUS, Peking University, Oxford University, and competitive research grants. The five-year initiative will promote education, research and commercialisation of environmental and water technologies.
Hosted by NUS Environment Research Institute (NERI), SPORE will be headed by Professor Sam Li from NERI and the Department of Chemistry at NUS. Faculty and students from the faculties of science, engineering and medicine will participate in research and teaching programmes spearheaded by SPORE.
Manpower Development
SPORE will train manpower through postgraduate degree programmes and executive programmes. At least 40 research scientists and engineers are expected to be trained over the next 5 years. SPORE will offer scholarships to selected candidates from NUS, Peking and Oxford universities to pursue postgraduate research under joint supervision of faculty members from NUS and at least one of the partnering universities. In addition, NUS and Peking University will develop a dual Master of Science programme for SPORE scholars.
This collaborative programme will provide opportunities for staff and students from the three universities to work on joint projects, and to participate in exchange visits. In addition, SPORE plans to develop an executive training programme for senior executives from Asia involved in environment and water management.
Technology Transfer
The three universities will work closely together to pursue research programmes to develop technologies for the environmental and water industry. SPORE will conduct research into areas such as efficient systems for safe drinking water; integrated technology based on “Reduce, Reuse and recycle (3R)”; enhanced biological-based technology for Highly Concentrated Organic Wastewater (HCOW) treatment; and river ecological rehabilitation.
Market-oriented technology exploitation
SPORE will provide a unique and integrated approach for developing novel technologies and products for commercialisation by local companies. The initiative has secured its first industry partner, Sinomem Technology Limited, which is an integrated water solution provider based on its proprietary know-how in membrane technology & biological treatment.
