Local shipyards to assist 31 SMEs in entrepreneurship promotion, innovation and human capital management
Singapore - The Marine Group Local Industry Upgrading Programme (LIUP) launched a new initiative - Marine Group LIUP SME Affiliate Programme - for the small and medium enterprises in the marine industry today. Minister of State for Trade & Industry and Minister in charge of Entrepreneurship, Mr Raymond Lim announced the launch of this new initiative at this afternoon's event, held at the Shangri-la Hotel.
Under the Marine Group LIUP SME Affiliate Programme, the seven larger shipyards will identify 31 promising SMEs and assist them in developing their capabilities in three areas: entrepreneurship promotion, innovation management and human capital development. SMEs will be able to tap on existing systems and processes, such as industry best practices, certified quality and business excellence programmes, to grow their businesses and groom their workforce. SMEs can also leverage on the larger companies to venture overseas, thereby growing their business beyond local shores. The list of SMEs participating in this new programme is given in Annex A.
Commented Mr Wong Peng Kin, Chairman, LIUP Steering Committee: "With the support of a strong pool of SMEs, Singapore's marine industry has grown significantly in the last decade. It is important that our SMEs grow in tandem with the industry. The Marine Group LIUP has implemented several meaningful programmes in the past. We hope that the SME Affiliate Programme will help to take promising SMEs to greater heights."
The Marine Group LIUP is an Economic Development Board (EDB) supported programme in which big and small players in the marine industry come together to work towards greater excellence for the industry. Established in 1996, the Marine Group LIUP today comprises seven larger shipyards and over 300 small and medium enterprises (SMEs) within the industry. The Group has been proactive in implementing innovative measures to maintain Singapore's leading edge in the marine industry.
Singapore's ship building and ship repair industry is a significant contributor to Singapore's leading position as an International Maritime Centre. Singapore shipyards account for 70% of the global FPSO conversion market and 60% of Jack-up Rigs. Underpinning this success is the crucial role played by the SMEs in the industry. The 300 marine industry SMEs in Singapore provide a wide and diversified range of supporting activities to the larger shipyard, accounting for about 70% of the shipyards' work.
Commenting on the latest development in the marine industry, Mr Manohar Khiatani, Director, Logistics & Transport, EDB said: "Singapore has come a long way in strengthening its position in the marine industry. The larger shipyards have made their mark in the international arena and enjoy an excellent reputation. There is enormous scope for our SMEs in the marine industry to capitalise on this and grow their international business. The Local Industry Upgrading Programme is an excellent platform for big and small companies to work together for mutual benefit. I am confident that with initiatives such as this LIUP, Singapore's marine industry will continue to improve and scale new heights."
About LIUP The Local Industry Upgrading Programme (LIUP) was initiated by the Economic Development Board (EDB) in 1986 to foster closer business development ties between homegrown companies and Multi-National Corporations (MNCs) in Singapore. The programme aims to upgrade and develop local enterprises from a total business perspective. By forging stronger collaborations with MNCs and large local corporations through LIUP, local enterprises can tap their technical and managerial expertise to upgrade their business operations to be more internationally competitive.
