Manufacturing output grew 1.5% in October

(I) Total Manufacturing Performance
  1. Manufacturing output grew 1.5% in October compared to October last year. While the transport engineering and biomedical manufacturing clusters expanded, contractions were seen in the electronics and chemicals clusters. Excluding the biomedical manufacturing cluster, manufacturing output fell 2.6% from October last year. The three-month moving average index for October rose 4.4% for total manufacturing output. The seasonally adjusted month-on-month index for October was down by 7.9% from September. Cumulatively, total manufacturing output for the first ten months of 2006 increased 12.6% compared to the same period last year.

(II) Performance by cluster
  1. The transport engineering cluster continued to be the fastest growing cluster. It grew 22.1% in October year-on-year with higher output from all segments. Output of the marine & offshore engineering segment rose 27.4%. All shipyards remained busy with the building and repairing of ships to meet delivery schedules. Oil rig fabricators completed a number of rig projects. In addition, the manufacture of oil field equipment was boosted by higher demand from the Middle East, China, Australia and the US. Output of the aerospace segment grew 14.4%, sustained by rising demand for commercial aircraft repairs. Output of the land transport segment also increased 10.4%. For the first ten months of 2006, cumulative output of the cluster grew 33.7% compared to the same period in 2005.

  1. The biomedical manufacturing cluster grew year-on-year in October by 17.8%. The growth came entirely from the pharmaceuticals segment whose output increased 20.1%. More active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) reached the final stage of the production process. The medical technology segment dipped 0.5% compared to last October. There were less export of medical equipment and devices. Cumulatively, output of the cluster grew 20.2% in the first ten months of 2006 compared to the same period in 2005.

  1. The precision engineering cluster grew 1.0% in October year-on-year. While the machinery & systems segment grew 8.8% the precision modules & components segment shrank 3.2%. Export orders stimulated higher production of industrial process control machinery, lifting & hoisting machinery, pumps, generators and refrigerating machinery. Lower output of precision components largely accounted for the contraction in the precision modules & components segment. Cumulatively, output of the cluster rose 10.5% in the first ten months of 2006.

  1. The electronics cluster contracted 14.3% in October with contractions in three segments offsetting the expansion in the semiconductors segment. The computer peripherals and data storage segment contracted 56.9% and 44.1% respectively. Lesser demand & production relocation were the contributing factors to lower production of products in these two segments. The infocomms & consumer electronics segment shrank 11.7% with the reduced manufacture of mobile products. In contrast, the manufacture of semiconductors continued to rise by 14.7% in response to export demand. Cumulatively, output of the cluster in the first ten months of 2006 grew 7.2% compared to the same period in 2005.

  1. The chemicals cluster contracted 4.7% in October with lower output from three major segments. The production of petroleum fell 9.3% due to maintenance shutdowns in some refining plants. Likewise, the output of petrochemicals and specialties chemicals declined due to maintenance shutdowns in some plants. These two segments contracted 2.1% and 5.6% respectively. For the first ten months of 2006, the cluster’s cumulative output grew 1.8% compared to the same period in 2005.

  1. The general manufacturing industries grew 3.7% in October compared to last October. The manufacture of food and beverage products increased 3.3%. The printing industries grew 1.2%. For the first ten months of 2006, a cumulative growth of 5.1% was recorded by this grouping of industries.
