(I) Total Manufacturing Performance
  1. Manufacturing output for the first five months of 2008 increased by 3.7% over the same period in 2007. On a three-month moving average year-on-year basis, output for May increased by 0.2%. The seasonally adjusted index for May dipped 5.7% from April. Production in May dropped 12.8% compared to the same month last year, largely due to a contraction in the biomedical manufacturing cluster.
(II) Performance by cluster
  1. The transport engineering cluster grew 13.0% in May 2008 compared with the same month last year. The marine & offshore engineering segment remained robust, expanding by 25.6% in May. The aerospace segment grew 2.9%, while the land transport segment shrank 7.7%. Cumulative output of the transport engineering cluster for the first five months of 2008 increased 7.3% compared to the same period last year.

  1. The electronics cluster grew by 3.8% year-on-year in May, with almost all segments recording positive growth. Output of the semiconductors segment rose 4.6%, whilst the computer peripherals and data storage segments grew by 13.2% and 12.4% respectively. However, output of the infocomms & consumer electronics segment decreased 22.1%. For the first five months of 2008, cumulative output of the electronics cluster was 2.8% higher than the same period last year.

  1. The general manufacturing industries grew 3.4% year-on-year in May. The food, beverages and tobacco industries grew 8.5%, while the printing segment contracted by 3.3%. Cumulative output of the general manufacturing industries for the first five months of 2008 rose 1.7% compared to the same period in 2007.

  1. Output of the chemicals cluster grew by 2.2% in May this year, compared with the same month last year. Refineries’ throughput surged 14.9% due to low levels of production in May the previous year. The petrochemicals segment shrank 3.9% due to some maintenance shutdowns within the month of May. The specialty chemicals segment grew 2.8% whilst the other chemicals segment contracted 29.5%. Cumulative output in the first five months of 2008 was 1.0% higher than in the same period last year.

  1. The precision engineering cluster contracted 4.8% in May, as the level of output in all segments of the cluster dropped compared with the same month last year. The machinery & systems segment and the precision modules & components segment shrank 0.3% and 8.4% respectively. Cumulative output in the first five months of 2008 was 1.5% lower than in the same period last year.

  1. The biomedical manufacturing cluster contracted 55.1% in May, compared to the same month last year. Output of the pharmaceuticals segment shrank by 58.2% due to a different mix of active pharmaceutical ingredients produced. The medical technology segment also shrank by 9.5%. Cumulative output of the cluster for the first five months of 2008 was 8.5% higher compared to the same period in 2007.
