'Global Schoolhouse' concept to tap US$2.2 trillion world market

Attract another 100,000 international students

A key recommendation is that Singapore will be regional destination of choice for highquality preparatory and boarding school education.

The Education Workgroup of the ERC's Sub-Committee on Services Industries said education services can potential contribute 3 to 5 per cent of Singapore's GDP in 10 years' time compared with the current 1.9 per cent, which would be comparable to established education hubs in the UK and Australia.

The growth is expected to come from the increases in spending by institutions as well as the spending of international students and executive trainees.

The workgroup's key recommendations:

Leverage on the branding potential of the renowned foreign universities already here. These universities will establish centres of excellence in teaching, world-class research and form strong linkages with the industry.

Allow private universities to be set up. These would add diversity to the landscape and would include branch campuses of good foreign universities.

Develop private commercial and specialty schools. The proposal is to have 40 high-quality schools, each enrolling 1,000 international students.

Encourage multinational companies to anchor their regional training centres here.
