Continental Chemical Corporation, a leading manufacturer of intermediate chemicals and specialty resins, has opened its new US$34 million plasticiser facility on Jurong Island.
The plant with an annual capacity of 100,000 tonnes, will be the first plasticiser producer in Singapore and one of Asia's largest. Plasticisers, together with other specialty chemicals, have a wide range of applications in paints, electrical cables and textiles.
The Singapore facility also houses its corporate headquarters and an R&D centre. Senior Minister of State for Trade and Industry and Education, Mr Tharman Shanmugaratnam, said that the new plant has harnessed the advantages of plugging into the chemical community on Jurong Island. The plant sources one of its two key raw materials on Jurong Island itself.
"The synergistic feedstock integration not only strengthens our oxo-chemical chain of activities in Singapore but also boosts the competitiveness of the companies on Jurong Island," he added.
"Jurong Island now boasts a well-diversified and growing base of downstream specialty chemical companies." On the choice of Singapore for the group's headquarters and manufacturing base, Mr Vijay Goradia, Chairman of Continental Chemical, said: "We have confidence in what Singapore has to offer. Jurong Island will provide the synergies that will boost our operational excellence and growth."
