Nagase committed to contributing to Singapore

Opens first overseas plant to manufacture and recycle chemicals

Japan's leading specialty chemical company, Nagase & Co Ltd, has opened its first overseas plant in Singapore to manufacture and recycle a broad range of electronic chemicals, thus reaffirming that the Republic continues to be an attractive investment location.

The Singapore outfit called Nagase FineChem Singapore Pte Ltd (NFCS) has state-of-the-art facilities on a 20,000 sq m site in Tuas View Industrial Park.

Outlining the company's $24 million investment here, Mr Kurosaki Takayuki, Managing Director of NFCS, said its distillation plant will provide off-site chemical recycling service. It will collect used chemicals from customers, recover the ingredients, refine and re-use them for the company's own products.

"With both manufacturing and recycling functions in place, we can control the chemical circulation flow and reduce the volume of raw materials imported from overseas and the volume of wastes," he explained.

Nagase, he stressed, believes that the environmental issue is as important as providing its customers with high quality products.

Mr Ko Kheng Hwa, Managing Director, Economic Development Board, was delighted that Nagase had chosen to locate its first overseas plant in Singapore. He said that the timely eco-friendly project had a clear fit with EDB's intent to grow the specialty chemicals industry.

He said the Board expected that by 2010, the output of electronic chemicals and materials in Singapore would triple from a 2001 base of $1.2 billion.
