According to US-based Milken Institute's recently released Capital Access Index 2004, Singapore is the No. 2 capital market in Asia, after Hong Kong. The renowned thinktank's study also ranked the Republic fourth in the global arena for its financial markets' efficiency in providing capital to entrepreneurs.
Covering 85 economies this year, the annual study analyses the openness and vitality of capital markets around the world. It aims to bring to the fore economies that do the best job of making capital available to entrepreneurs for building companies and generating new jobs. This year's report also indicated a common thread among the top countries. Besides vibrant economies, they all have a high standard of living.

This year's report also highlighted how the Asian recovery was spurred in part by the broadening of access to capital. Countries involved in the 1997-1998 Asian crisis such as South Korea, Malaysia, the Philippines, Indonesia and Thailand have all nearly returned to or surpassed their precrisis levels of production and profitability.
