The National University of Singapore (NUS) has launched The Singapore Academy of GxP Excellence (SAGE) in response to growing demand for safe and effective quality health products produced under stricter scientific standards of regulation.
GxP refers to quality guidelines in manufacturing, clinical research and health product safety or vigilance to ensure product safety, quality and efficacy. This includes products such as medicines, biological products, cosmetics, health supplements, traditional medicines and medical devices for public use.
NUS is working with the Singapore Economic Development Board (EDB), the Health Sciences Authority of Singapore (HSA), the Singapore Workforce Development Agency (WDA) and leading pharmaceutical companies to develop training programmes and promote best pharmaceutical practices in Singapore.
SAGE will offer multi-institutional-based programmes that meet the evolving global needs of the pharmaceutical industry. Targeting professionals, managers, executives and technicians employed by the pharmaceutical industry as well as those keen to move into the industry, SAGE will offer continuing education for basic degree holders and those with diploma and Institute of Technical Education qualifications. The Academy plans to train some 300 to 500 professionals per year.
Faculty members will be drawn from the academia, health authorities and major industry players in Singapore and overseas. Says Associate Professor Chan Sui Yung, Head, SAGE and Department of Pharmacy, NUS, "It will be the first centre in this region that will harness state-of-the-art technologies to deliver global programmes efficiently and effectively, and continually identify education and training gaps and provide relevant course content."
With Asia's rising importance as a market and source of talent for the global pharmaceutical industry, the entry of SAGE is timely. As Aw Kah Peng, Assistant Managing Director, Industry Development, EDB, says, "The Singapore Academy of GxP Excellence is an excellent initiative to nurture and train the world-class workforce required to support this growth industry."
