Future●Singapore
While continuing to attract businesses which can do well in Singapore in the various industry clusters, EDB is mounting a new initiative to build business activity within selected business themes where Singapore itself wants good solutions. What this does is allow investors to use Singapore as a working model and a test bed for new ideas, and in this way enhance Singapore’s attractiveness to would-be investors on top of the current investment incentives. The products and services thereby developed will not only have a market in Singapore but have world-wide market potential.
We have identified three such business themes, as of now:
Urban solutions: Half the world’s population now live in cities. Cities need to have good pollution control – clean water, clean energy, clean air, waste management – besides managing traffic congestion, water conservation, reliable energy supply, good urban planning and other municipal challenges.
Wellness, Ageing and Healthcare: Many countries in the world have rapidly ageing populations and deep challenges in affordable healthcare. Health is one thing people are prepared to spend on if they have the money on hand. There is a growing interest in wellness and health, especially for the ageing population, which will drive efforts in translational medicine, reducing healthcare costs, improving personal productivity especially for the ageing, and a wide variety of products and services which promote wellness and good health.
Lifestyle Products and Services: These are business opportunities built upon the interest and purchasing power of the broad middle class in Singapore and the large numbers of rising middle class, especially in Asia. They are products and services which appeal to the young and youthful (sports, entertainment, gadgets and games), and to the older with cash to spare (leisure, recreation, wellness and branded products and services).
Collectively we are referring to this initiative as:
Future●Singapore: The Future in Singapore – Singapore in the Future
It will produce new products and services the world will want in future which we first produce in Singapore, hence, the Future in Singapore. It will develop and test new ideas where we will be at the forefront in the use of technology for urban live-ability, healthcare and quality living, hence Singapore in the Future
