Turning her Hunch into a Multi-Million Success Story

Olivia Lum was just 28 when she looked around her and decided there was money to be made in water treatment.

So she set up Hyflux Ltd with S$20,000, and put all her energy into building the company as a liquid treatment specialist.

That was in 1989. Today, Hyflux is one of the largest water treatment companies in Singapore. Listed on the Singapore Exchange in 2000, it is a stock market darling and has been named by Forbes as one of the "Best 200 Small Companies in the World".

Hyflux is a shining example of successful technopreneurship.

Ms Lum, its CEO and president, cites Singapore's political stability, transparency and excellent environmental infrastructure as key ingredients in the company's success.

"All these have helped us in our business development all these years. The government's encouragement of entrepreneurship among SMEs was also a definite plus point," she says.

Armed with an impressive array of innovative products and services, ranging from membrane manufacturing to process integration in the water, waste water and pharmaceutical sectors, Hyflux aims to extend its presence in regional and global markets.

"Worldwide, Singapore is famous for its excellent environmental infrastructure," says Ms Lum.

"Hyflux's core business is in the environmental sector and, hence, Singapore's reputation helps us in projecting our company's capabilities overseas."

"EDB has certainly helped us greatly in the past with grants for our pilot projects. We would like EDB to continue to be actively engaged in our development works and make Hyflux's dream of continually developing its own proprietary knowledge a reality."
