Professor Asit Biswas
President
Professor Asit Biswas first worked as a civil engineer at Ward, Ashcroft and Parkman, Liverpool, England before moving to Canada in 1967 as a visiting Professor. It wasn't long before Professor Biswas joined the Department of Energy, Mines and Resources as a senior scientist, where he would play an important role in a new Ministry of Environment that was established by the Government of Canada. One of the highlights of Professor Biswas' career was being the Senior Scientific Advisor to the Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), and later on the Senior Advisor to the Secretary General of the UN Water Conference. Amidst all his commitments, Professor Biswas continued to pursue his research interests in Oxford. At the same time, he was also advisor to national governments and international organisations. But in 1998, Professor Biswas founded the Third World Centre for Water Management in Mexico, which is an independent, knowledge-based think tank focusing on knowledge generation, synthesis, application and dissemination. Under his leadership, the Centre has established a unique international identity in pursuing cutting-edge and forward-looking research. For his dedication and contributions, Professor Biswas has received numerous accolades, among which are the two highest awards of the International Water Resources Association — the Crystal Drop and Millennium Award.
