Professor Thomas L. Magnanti
President
Professor Thomas L. Magnanti is a consummate educator, researcher and academic entrepreneur whose activities have spanned much of higher education — in engineering, management, applied mathematics, and other fields. He is one of the fourteen Institute Professors at MIT, former Dean of MIT's School of Engineering, and for several years headed a third of the MIT Sloan School of Management. Professor Magnanti has developed and led many centres and programmes. These include industrial and international collaborations, as founding Co-director, MIT's Leaders for Manufacturing and System Design and Management Programs and, as founding Director, the Singapore-MIT Alliance for Research and Technology (SMART). More recently, Professor Magnanti has become the founding President of the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD) — a new Singapore university being established in collaboration with MIT. His dream is for SUTD to become a preeminent institution for technology and design and to do for Singapore what MIT and Stanford have done locally, nationally and internationally — become an intellectual hub and engine of growth. Outside of MIT, Professor Magnanti has served as president of three major professional societies and on a number of corporate and university boards, and edited the leading technical journal Operations Research. Professor Magnanti has received numerous educational and research awards, including several honorary degrees. He is also a member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Quotes by this sessionist
"By unleashing student potential... and providing supportive environments, universities can foster remarkable achievements..."
